Guest Speaker: AnnMarie Spexet

Engineers Without Borders - USA (EWB-USA) is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students. In the 9 years of its existence, it has become one of the fastest growing engineering societies in the US, with over 200 chapters across the United States, including sixteen in the state of Florida with two in the Tampa area (University of South Florida, and a Tampa area professional chapter). The projects are conducted in over 41 different countries, including local projects in the United States. These projects are performed with the community members, local organizations, local contractors, engineering students, professors, professional engineers in both the US and the local country.

EWB is supported by many companies through employee contributions, matching grants, and volunteers, and is also partially sponsored by ASCE. Funds are also raised through grassroots efforts by the volunteers.

AnnMarie Spexet has been involved with EWB-USA for over six years working on projects in Nicaragua, Mali, and India. She helped to start the Houston professional chapter, and is one of the chairs for the technical advisory committee that oversees all of the projects implemented with EWB. She received her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities, and her masters in environmental engineering from Rice University. She has worked as an environmental engineering consultant and is a licensed engineer in Texas. She currently works as an engineer and software developer in Atlanta, GA.
